By Henry Fountain, 9/22/08, New York Times,

Efforts to restore populations of the giant tortoises of the Galápagos Islands have been among the world‚s most visible and successful conservation programs. But the work came too late for several of the 15 generally recognized Galápagos species.

Or did it? Extensive DNA research on museum specimens and existing tortoise populations suggests there is the potential to restore Geochelone elephantopus, which lived on the island of Floreana.Charles ...

Anahuac, Texas - In this town on the edge of the Trinity Bay, alligators normally outnumber people three to one, and the annual Texas GatorFest draws 30,000 people - more than 10 times the town's population.

But not this year, not with Hurricane Ike. The storm forced the cancellation of the festival and made the gator hunting season a shadow of its normal self.

Wildlife officials say the gators' habitat and food sources also took a significant hit and it may take time for the population ...

By Mark Davis, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sunday, September 14, 2008

There may be harder ways to make $800 in a week, but Kirk DeKalb doesn‚t want to know about them. He‚s waded swamps, swatted mosquitoes and run the very real risk of nasty bites, just to pocket that amount.

And that‚s on a good week, DeKalb says.

A bad week?
I am seeking a PhD student to join my research group starting in September 2009 to begin

studies in the general area of snake evolutionary ecology. Recently, a major research focus

of the lab has been investigating questions about the evolutionary, ecological, and

functional basis of venom variation using rattlesnakes of the genus Sistrurus as a model

system.
Ceratophora neonates

I picked up three ceratophora neonates at the Columbia, SC reptile show and they are a hoot already. They of course were born from a newly imported female and they are TINY. I fed them pinky legs on Sunday night and they ate very well. I also picked up some adults and two of the females are gravid, so I just hope that the babies make it okay. I'll post pics of them later. Here are the cute babies:

I recently returned from my trip out to New Mexico/Arizona where I went herping with my brother, York, and a good internet friend, Paul. Thanks to American Airlines and an unexpected stay in DFW on Friday night, our trip was delayed until midday on Saturday. We headed straight out and hit some talus slopes, but it was getting late and it was really chilly, so we saw nothing. We decided to head back to lower elevation and do some road cruising for the night and our luck picked up.

We saw ...

Hello everybody,

My name is Brian and I live in Bristol, south-west England. I am 56 years old, and have been interested in venomous snakes since I was six years old, when my auntie, who lived in Africa, brought me a book on African wildlife, and I saw a picture of a Gaboon Viper, I was hooked since that moment.

I have a little collection of 16 venomous snakes at home, and my main interests are snake venoms and snake venom poisoning.

I look forward to speaking to you all over ...

Hi at all! (from very cold Carinthia)

This viedeo has been posted on a austrian reptile forum:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vajhKUonFCs

The discussions wether it's real or not won't stop since then, of course.

Maybe our US friends here know more about this incidence?

Is it real or just "show"?

If it's real, where and when did it happen and who are these people acting with a large rattler that amateurish?

Cheers

Peter
